The Palestinian Red Crescent Society – Ramallah Branch was founded in 1965 as a non-profit charitable organization aimed at providing healthcare and social services to the citizens of Birzeit and the Ramallah district, currently totaling 300,000 people distributed across the cities of Birzeit and Ramallah, as well as one hundred villages. It also shares the international Red Crescent objectives of caring for prisoners of war, detainees, war-affected individuals, disaster victims, and more.

Since its establishment, the society has opened medical clinics, emergency services, and ambulance units. It has been a pioneering organization in emergency services operating 24 hours a day. Additionally, it has played an active role in caring for the victims of the 1967 war, especially in villages that were destroyed such as Ya’lu, ‘Amwas, and Beit Nuba. The society has also been actively involved in emergency and ambulance services during the Intifada period.

Since 1967, the West Bank and Gaza Strip have faced the drawbacks of being under occupation, particularly evident in the health and social sectors. These challenges prompted the Palestinian Red Crescent Society in Birzeit to diligently work towards providing alternative health and social services to compensate for the severe deficiencies in these areas.

The society has managed to expand its medical services, improve its performance, and elevate its standards to become a leading entity in this field. It has raised the banner of healthcare, declaring it a humanitarian need and a human right for every individual, embodying the principles upheld by the society.

Stages of the society’s progress

The hospital was established in 1987 and licensed in 1991. Since then, due to the conditions faced by our Palestinian people, the management of the society took on the responsibility of developing and updating the hospital to meet the medical needs of the local population, especially those with limited income and socially disadvantaged individuals unable to afford high medical costs.

The hospital initially began as a 15-bed maternity hospital. Two additional floors were later added, and it underwent development, updates, and the addition of new departments. It has evolved into a general hospital with departments including internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, neonatal care, as well as supporting departments such as laboratories, radiology, pharmacy, and emergency services. There are also two fully equipped operating rooms with state-of-the-art medical devices.

The hospital has also entered agreements with the Ministry of Health to handle childbirth cases, as well as with military medical services and several other official and private entities.

The hospital’s total area is approximately 4000 square meters, including a new building consisting of five floors and a roof.
